Scott Bateman Animation Show

Finally—the perfect lead-in for The PIT's 8:00 pm Comic Book Club.

Scott Bateman is a prolific and witty cartoonist who produced an animated short

a day for an entire year. Scott's work can be found at Plum TV's Scott Bateman Presents; at Salon.com, for which he creates a weekly animated series; and on YouTube, where you'll find such unlikely stuff as Scott's animated versions of PIT improv troupes. To get a feel for his work, check out Scott's public service announcement about VD (which actually aired on prime time) by clicking here.

Tonight Scott will show some of his political cartoons and then host a panel discussion about the news with sharp NYC comics. As the official description puts it, "Think The McLaughlin Group, but funny on purpose."

7:00 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); tickets are $5

Sweet Haven

This exciting new show comes from sketch troupe Peoples Republic of Komedy, whose members learned how to be funny in Seattle and then sunk all their savings into making a mark in NYC. They're off to a great start with this new weekly extravaganza, which uses sketch (and even a theme song) to create a comedic framework for their stand-up guests.

Tonight's superb lineup consists of

Pete Holmes (razor-sharp & lightning-fast mind, and one of the finest stand-ups in the country;

VH1's Best Week Ever, Comedy Central's Premium Blend and Motherload;

writer for CollegeHumor.com; cartoonist for mags ranging from

The New Yorker to Cosmo Girl; host of UCBT's monthly open mic extravaganza Gutbucket),

who enjoy discussing comic books while getting laughs.

Tonight's guest is award-winning comics writer/artist Alex Robinson, whose graphic novels

include Box Office Poison, Tricked, and the upcoming Too Cool to Be Forgotten.

To get a feel for the smart, playful vibe of Comic Book Club, please check out its podcasts—

that is, audio recordings of previous shows in their entirety—by clicking here.

(And for my fave, a delightful show with Kevin "Batman" Conroy, please click here).

Harold Night

The Harold is longform improv, pioneered by Del Close.

Tonight, five improv troupes—

RAGNARÖCK, The F*cking Kennedys, The Law Firm, Bangs, and Whorenado—

each give it a go for 30 minutes, with

short breaks in between, for a total of 3 hours.

Some of the groups are great; some are less so. And this show

is designed more for students of improv than the general public.

But if you're interested, and patient, a mere $5 will buy you

a full evening's education...and periodic solid laughs.

8:00-11:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5

Tonight on TV

Iliza Shlesinger

Many have a love/hate relationship with NBC's Last Comic Standing.
The show can make careers; but it can also opt for shallow nonsense over substance.

Unfortunately, last week was very much the latter,

resulting in an episode best described as mind-numbing.

The embarrassingly juvenile aspect of the series reached new levels when

the comedy challenge was to match the wit and wisdom of—wait for it—Carrot Top.

If you didn't see the resulting disastrous attempts at prop comedy...good for you.

It was even worse than you imagine.

Also painful was the continuing disrespect and misogyny shown to

Iliza Shlesinger (above) and, by extension, to women everywhere.

Shlesinger repeatedly complains that she's picked on by fellow contestants for being the only woman in the group. And she's right. But those guy's are apparently just reflecting the attitudes of LCS' producers. For example, this episode began with Shlesinger being doused with water so the audience could ogle her wet top. And next's week challenge takes place in that bastion of female empowerment: the Playboy mansion.

As for the actual comedy performances at the end, Papa CJ demonstrated he barely has three minutes of material. (If you have to spend most of a short set picking on an audience member, think hard about crafting more and better jokes...)

On the other hand, I very much enjoyed Paul Foot's work. His style is different enough to need more than a few minutes to win over an LA audience, though; so, not surprisingly, he didn't. (Of course, he also shouldn't have been stupid enough to challenge Shlesinger, who's not yet a great comic but is utterly in her element on that LA stage.)

With the ouster of God's Pottery and Paul Foot, virtually the only reason to continue watching this season is to enjoy Brit bassist Jim Tavaré. So if there's no LSC report here next week, you'll know I decided life is too short.

If you're seeking TV comedy tonight, though, consider Comedy Central's The Gong Show. It doesn't champion depth, but at least it's funny. And tonight's guest judges include two comedy giants, Brian Posehn and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog.

As for the show that directly follows it—Comedy Central's shabby watered-down version of LCS titled Reality Bites Back—it's only worth catching if you fast forward to the bits where host Michael Ian Black makes snarky remarks in perfect deadpan. Michael, we love you; but was this really the best gig your agent could find?

Last Comic Standing airs 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm on NBC.

The Gong Show airs 10:00 pm and midnight on Comedy Central.

Reality Bites Back airs 10:30 pm and 12:30 am on Comedy Central.

The Apple Sisters: The Musical

The delicious Apple SistersKimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, and Sarah Lowe, with Tom Thomsen on keyboard—have sung, danced, and naughtily joked their ways into New York City's heart. This homage to 1940s girl groups like The Andrew Sisters has been one of the great successes of 2007, having done 10 original shows, sold-out performances at comedy festivals around the country, and recently winning the 2008 ECNY Award for Best Musical Comedy Act.

Tonight the gals have put together their best bits, along with new material, to create a laugh-packed musical running over an hour. Featuring FDR, pickles, and God, it's full of fun and surprises.

From the official description: "The Apple Sisters are Candy, Cora, and Seedy. Their mother, Ms. Reddy Apple, was a vaudeville star and she passed down the legacy to her three girls! The trio present their live show, broadcast on WXYZ AM Radio, straight to the troops in Germany, and present the show on stage at the Peoples Improv Theater in their first and favorite home, the Big Apple! Be a chum and always use Doramad Toothpaste, now with Thorium!"

Ace sketch comedy troupe Pangea 3000 and superb storyteller Anthony Atamanuik

Pangea 3000: Recommending the Beatles and Anthony Atamanuik: Pissing My Pants on Vine

Two stellar comedy shows for a mere five bucks.

First up is world-class sketch troupe Pangea 3000, which consists of

Andrew Cleary, Sam Kemmis, Dan Klein, Arthur Meyer, and Seth Reiss.

These guys have blown the roof off with such instant classics as a spelling bee

for fart noises, and a doctor announcing devastating news and then going off to calmly eat a chicken sandwich while family members panic. To view two of Pangea 3000's surreal tales of games guys play, involving whoopee cushions and tag, please click here and here; and then come let these exceptionally clever writer/performers make you laugh hard and often.

The double-bill then continues with Pissing My Pants on Vine, a one-man autobiographical show about doing drugs and booze while writing for children's television from the wonderful Anthony Atamanuik (actor on NBC's 30 Rock; hilarious reporter who covered the New Hampshire primaries for The Huffington Post; ace storyteller on NYC monthly comedy show The Nights of Our Lives; member of champion improv troupe Death by Roo Roo—which will tonight be battling at Cage Match for its 11th victory in a row!).

CollegeHumor.com, Live on Stage

The folks behind highly popular Web site CollegeHumor.com get on stage tonight, along with top stand-up comics Pete Holmes, Jacqueline Novak, and Christian Finnegan.

Please note the comedy of CollegeHumor.com isn't for every taste—like, for example, mine. But the site clearly understands its audience; and if you're one of the folks it appeals to, this is a great opportunity to hear behind-the-scenes stories and watch material too raw even for the Web.

Seats for this show are sold out, but you can still come and enjoy if you don't mind standing.

9:30 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5

vs.

Cage Match: Death by Roo Roo vs. Veal

This delightful show pits two< improv teams against each other while creating the

atmosphere of a professional wrestling arena—and providing such side-shows

as a bout to the death between guys costumed as an alcoholic wolf and TV's Alf.

(For a spirited weekly report on the wrestling aspect of Cage Match, please click here.)

The current reining champ at Cage Match is arguably the gutsiest improv group in NYC: Death by Roo Roo, consisting of uniformly brilliant comics Anthony Atamanuik, Neil Casey, Jackie Clarke, Brett Gelman, John Gemberling, and Curtis Gwinn. This juggernaut doesn't merely walk over opponents, it pounds them into the ground. So far this season DBRR has trounced 10 troupes in a row, winning a total of 1,081 audience votes vs. a mere 422 for all its opponents combined.

Tonight's contender is Veal, which will pose a new kind of challenge: It's a musical improv troupe that not only makes up scenes, but also lyrics and music to bring them to glorious life. The group says it "loves making up songs together, especially about love, death, San Francisco, and raping." Its members consist of Kristin Aldrich, Doug Gordon, Ashley Hale, Abby Holland, Jason Nettle, Susan Pickover, Christopher Scott, and Andrew Weiss, with improv piano accompaniment from the wonderful Frank Spitznagel.

Will the audience prefer the tough, street-smart Roo Roo, or a group who charms with tuneful rhymes?

There's no telling what'll happen...which is one of the great pleasures of this extravaganza.

11:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5

NYC Comedy Picks for Friday 7/25/08

Tonight's recommendations for the best in New York City comedy

(in chronological order, with top picks marked by colored brackets) include:

a one-woman show from talented writer/actress/improvisor Ellie Kemper (7:00 pm),

[TOP PICK] deliciously funny Kate McKinnon performing a one-woman show about pill-popping

fairy princesses, plus sketch/improv duo Nick Kocher & Brian McElhaney, in the double-bill

Kate McKinnon: Disenchanted and BriTANick: Begging for Approval (8:00 pm),

[TOP PICK] typically stellar stand-up comics at one of the funniest productions in NYC—and winner of

the 2008 ECNY Award for Best Variety Show—The Greg Johnson & Larry Murphy Show (8:30 pm),

[TOP PICK] some of the finest improv in NYC from the comedy genius members of The Stepfathers (9:30 pm),

[TOP PICK] two superb improv troupes joining forces in Centralia and Project:Projekt (9:30 pm),

singing improvisors who use an interview with an audience member to craft The Made-Up Musical (10:00 pm),

laid-back improvisors performing a cozy show, and celebrating a member's birthday,

at the Manhattan Comedy Collective (10:00 pm),

[TOP PICK] one of my all-time favorite improv troupes—which has currently trounced 11

challengers in a row at Cage Match—the brilliant and daring members of Death by Roo Roo (11:00 pm),

Kate McKinnon deconstructing fairy tales; and Nick Kocher & Brian McElhaney of BriTANicK

Kate McKinnon: Disenchanted and BriTANick: Begging for Approval

A hilarious one-woman show, plus comedy from an unusual sketch duo, for a mere eight bucks.

Disenchanted comes from delightful comedic actress Kate McKinnon, who's a

cast member on the Logo TV series The Big Gay Sketch Show. In a series of vignettes, Kate turns fairy tales upside-down and exposes their dark sides as you "watch the beloved fairy princesses of your childhood pop a few Klonopins and eat themselves into a coma." The material is generally funny; but what makes this show magical is the quality of Kate's stellar performances. This is a sharp, witty actress who "gets" both verbal and physical comedy down to her bones. Don't miss any chance to catch this rising star.

The double-bill then continues with sketch/improv duo BriTANicK, consisting of Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher. To get a feel for these young performers, check out their videos about post-sex desires and drug cravings by clicking here and here.

8:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

Pete Holmes, Leo Allen, and Andrea Rosen...

...and Greg Johnson, Larry Murphy, and DC Benny

The Greg Johnson & Larry Murphy Show

This is one of the best comedy shows in New York.

It's hosted by Greg Johnson (sharp, quick-witted stand-up comic) and

Larry Murphy (genius comedic chameleon & voiceover actor who performs all the

key characters on Adult Swim's Assy McGee; other animated TV series include

Home Movies, O'Grady, Computer Lab, Word Girl, and Sunday Pants;

sketch performer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien; announcer for

ESPN's Cheap Seats;  for an animated VO reel, please click here).

Tonight's stand-up comics haven't been announced yet; but as you can see from last week's guests (above), the lineup is usually stellar.

8:30 pm at Rififi, 332 East 11th Street (between 1st & 2nd Avenues); tickets are $5

Back: Will Hines, Zach Woods, Michael Delaney, and Bobby Moynihan

Front: Chris Gethard, Shannon O'Neill, and Silvija Ozols

The Stepfathers

Some of the smartest & finest improv comics in NYC—Michael Delaney,

Chris Gethard, Will Hines, Bobby Moynihan, Shannon O'Neill, Silvija Ozols,

and Zach Woods—make up a series of scenes from a one-word audience suggestion.

With art and grace, these star talents will make you laugh—a lot.

9:30 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

Centralia & Project:Projekt

Two acclaimed comedy troupes, Centralia and Project:Projekt, join forces for one night to rock the house with improv.

Centralia consists of Kevin Scott, Jay Rhoderick, and Matt Higgins (Comedy Central, PSNBC; former improv instructor at Yale School of Drama; also founding member of improv troupe Burn Manhattan; three-time finalist for the Andy Kaufman award; for a stand-up sample, please click here). The official description: "Centralia is known as one of the boldest, most inventive, ground-breaking improvisation groups to ever hit a New York stage. See the performers the Daily News called 'the purest form of theatre,' the Chicago Sun said is 'advancing the art of improvisation,' and the Village Voice said watching is 'like having a front row seat at a stranger's dream.'"

Project:Projekt consists of Joe Schiappa (comedic actor, and director of numerous fun productions including the off-Broadway comedy Matt and Ben) and Nathan Phillips (CBS, CNN, BBC; one-man show Bill the Billboard).

9:30 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); tickets are $8

The Made-Up Musical

Veteran improvisor John O'Donnell is accompanied

by a rotating cast that might include such superb talents as

Tara Copeland, Scott Glover, Alex Marino, Louis Kornfeld,

Jessica Allen, Robin Rothman, and Megan Gray

—and with Frank Spitznagel on piano—

turn an interview with an audience member

into a musical they make up on the spot.

10:00 pm at The Magnet Theatre, 254 West 29th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $7

Stacy Mayer, Carrie Sipple, and Jeremiah Murphy

Manhattan Comedy Collective

If you'd like to experience a gentler, more relaxed, but still quite smart type of improv, visit the Manhattan Comedy Collective run by the wonderful Stacy Mayer (who's quick as lightning, but much funnier). Almost every Friday features Character Dogville, in which performers dress up as odd characters and spontaneously interact with each other.

Tonight's theme is high school.

And there's likely to be a party-like atmosphere because troupe member Carrie Sipple's birthday is this weekend.

10:00 pm at the Sage Theatre, 711 Seventh Avenue, 2nd floor (bet. 47th and 48th Streets);

tickets are $10 if you mention either HyReviews or Dogville Blog at the door (otherwise $15)

Death by Roo Roo: Your F*cked Up Family

Arguably the gutsiest improv troupe in NYC, the brilliant comics of Death by Roo RooAnthony Atamanuik, Neil Casey, Jackie Clarke, Brett Gelman, John Gemberling, and Curtis Gwinn—interview an audience member about family and then act out his or her life story

via improvised scenes. Sometimes scary, and usually hilarious.

11:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

Murderfist: Rabbit Hole Junction

Sketch group Murderfist creates dark comedy sketches that are unsettling, and may elicit more discomfort than laughs. (For example, to watch a somewhat grueling tale of an unlikely gay couple done in the style of a silent film, please click here.) But if you like East Village performance art, you'll probably like this troupe.

The official description of tonight's show:

"The most outlandish sketches you will see in NYC. Moments after setting off on their quest for one thousand testicles, Murderfist slipped between the cracks of reality. Somewhere between Seventh Avenue and the gates Hell, late night comedy festered and boiled. Witness as the stars align on the last Friday of every month and brand new sketch material spews from the inter-dimension truck stop that is Rabbit Hole Junction."

11:00 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); tickets are $8

Becca Jones & Phaea Crede take the month off, but provide able replacements

Delusions of Spandex

Delusions of Spandex is a monthly sketch comedy & funny character show. It's normally hosted by adorable female duo Phaea Crede & Becca Jones (for videos of the gals goofing around, please click here and here), but tonight will be taken over by these two fine comics:

Luke Thayer (co-host of Brooklyn biweekly live show Living Room Comedy).

Guests haven't been announced, but are typically up-and-coming sketch troupes.

Glennis & Eliza: I Eat Pandas

Glennis McMurray and Eliza Skinner are simply geniuses

at taking a suggestion from the audience and creating

an entire musical based around it, using only their imaginations,

immense talent, and the aid of their wonderful improv pianist

Frank Spitznagel. Each of these gals is a powerhouse performer;

what they manage to create together tends to be sheer magic.

You don't have to take my word for it, either;

the duo won the 2008 ECNY Award for Best Improv Group.

Don't miss any chance to enjoy these comedic wizards at play.

8:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

Comedic musical duo Booth Daniels and Patrick Frankfort, and Drop Six

Drop Six Variety Hour

Drop Six is a superb NYC-based sketch troupe that makes great use of physical comedy and music. The group consists of Mary Theresa Archbold (for my review of this star's funny & touching 2007 FringeNYC show Jazz Hand, please click here), Tim Girrbach, Alicia Levy, Jason Salmon, Rodney Umble, and director Larry Rosen. This group's honors include Best of the Fest selection by Second City at the 2006 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. And their Drop Six: Mr. Lucky show killed at last year's FringeNYC, placing in my top 15 of the festival (out of 188 wildly diverse & competitive productions). For a brief medley of memorable Drop Six moments, please click here.

Tonight features new sketches, plus a visit from comedic musical duo Booth Daniels and Patrick Frankfort, a.k.a. Booth & Pat. Patrick sings and plays guitar; Booth sings and does percussion ...mostly via his voice. To watch these guys in action, please click here and here.

The Harvard Sailing Team: A Hundred Years of Song and Dance

The Harvard Sailing Team, which just won the ECNY Award for Best Sketch Comedy Group,

performs their special brand of fresh, imaginative comedy

that turns familiar rituals on their head. (For a video about awkward goodbyes

at the end of a party, please click here.) The very talented troupe consists of

Rebecca Brey, Jen Curran, Clayton Early, Faryn Einhorn, Katie Larson,

Adam Lustick, Chris Smith, Billy Scafuri, and Sara Taylor.

This new collection of sketches, titled

A Hundred Years of Song and Dance, covers such topics

as Melissa Etheridge, Duck Tales, and American Gladiators.

9:30 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); tickets are $8

Dave Pasquesi and T.J. Jagodowski

TJ & Dave

Chicago-based TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi are widely considered among the finest long-form improvisors alive. Just by feeling their way through moment by moment, they create one-hour tales that most authors couldn't match with months of labored writing.

The duo is performing tonight and Sunday night. Highly recommended.

10:00 pm at Barrow Street Theatre, 27 Barrow Street (on 7th Avenue, south of Christopher); $20

Reuben Williams: As Seen on TV

Anthony King demonstrates that in addition to running UCBT-NY brilliantly, he's a superb improvisor and actor. Joining him are stellar talents Eugene Cordero, Lennon Parham, Charlie Sanders, Eric Scott, Kate Spencer, Charlie Todd, and Joe Wengert. Together, they interview an audience member, and then use the answers as the basis for a new TV show...which this fiercely talented comedy troupe creates & performs for you on the spot.

10:30 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

4 Track!

Springboarding from a word suggested by the audience,

George Basil, Frank Campanella, Christian Capozzoli, and Matt Evans

perform organic & energetic long-form improv for about 40 minutes.

Basil is a stand-out, but they're all sharp, committed improvisors.

There's also a warm chemistry between the men, which is especially evident

if you arrive early to watch them getting ready on stage: They toss a ball

back and forth, and then toss each other back and forth...sending

a body message of "If you throw an improv concept at me, you can trust me

to not let it drop..." One of the Magnet's most popular shows.
