30 Rock: On Strike!
The TV version of NBC's 30 Rock—winner of the 2007 Emmy Award
for Outstanding Comedy Series—is on hold
right now because of the Writers Guild strike.
The cast and writers have therefore decided to perform
their show live tonight at UCBT!

or at least get into the standing room section.

Brian Longwell (wrote/performed two Edinburgh Fringe Festival one-man shows, Why Work?

Tonight's show is about promises: "Everyone makes them, no one keeps them.
Wool will talk about them for an hour—or will he?"
9:30 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5

short breaks in between, for a total of 3 hours.
Some of the groups are great; some are less so. And this show
is designed more for students of improv than the general public.
But if you're interested, and patient, a mere $5 will buy you
a full evening's education...and periodic solid laughs.

NYC Comedy Picks for Wednesday 11/21/07
Tonight's recommendations for the best in NYC live comedy include
the delightful & highly talented Amber Petty, Jessie Schupack, and Tricia McAlpin of Penny, and
hilarious sketch duo Matt DeCoster and Will Hines, in the double-bill White Orphans/7 Fights (8:00 pm),
an improvised imagining of what goes on the day Before The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (9:30 pm),
and a laid-back free show where virtually anything can happen on a School Night (11:00).
Pat Shay
Comedy troupe Red tells stories off the top of their heads, then improvises scenes
based on the tales; and also perform sketches from material they improvised the previous week. It's a clever way of crafting a sketch show organically, week by week—and you can watch the whole process, at no charge. The group consists of Kevin Allison, Elna Baker (who's away this week), Chris Caniglia, Scott Eckert, Sarah Lowe, Sarah Nowak, Pat Shay, Nate Starkey, Shelly Stover, and Kevin Townley.
6:00 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); free
Comedy troupe Penny (Amber Petty, Jessie Schupack and Tricia McAlpin) explore white orphans...
...and Matt DeCoster & Will Hines portray combative relationships
Penny: White Orphans and Hines & DeCoster: 7 Fights
One of the things we should all be thankful for is sketch/improv group Penny, consisting of the adorable & very funny comedy trio Amber Petty, Trisha McAlpin, and Jessie Schupack. In tonight's show, the gals promise to "guide you through their wonderful world of art, music, and laughter. You'll laugh till you cry, cry till you laugh, and be moved enough that
you too will want a white orphan for your very own." Directed by Susannah Beckett.
7 Fights is a hilarious sketch show written and performed by Will Hines & Matt DeCoster, formerly of acclaimed improv group Monkeydick (plus Will burned up the stage a few months ago with sibling Kevin as The Brothers Hines at UCBT's Cage Match).
The show includes such scenes of contention as a political debate in which a guy with a bloody harpoon through him blithely denies he's been impaled. In a word, fun.
8:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5
Ready to tackle your holiday anxieties are Paul Downs, Alan Fessenden, Elana Fishbein, Marcy Jarreau, Leslie Korein, Louis Kornfeld, and Peter McNerney, who improvise a show based on an audience member's confession.
8:00 pm at The Magnet Theatre, 254 West 29th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5
The Macy's Day Before Thanksgiving Day Parade
From the official description:
"Giant balloons!
Marching bands!
Musical numbers!
Santa Claus!
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the most paradey parade in the whole world.
This is not a show about that parade.
This is a show about the Macy's Day-Before-Thanksgiving Day Parade.
It's a totally different parade. It's like...better."
And considering there's no one credited as writer,
I'm guessing the show is entirely improvised.
The talented performers are John Adam, Devlyn Corrigan, Aaron Glaser, Brian Faas,
Kevin Hines, Tricia McAlpin, Megan Neuringer, Adam Pally, and Chris Schell.
9:30 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5
Kurt Braunohler, Pat Shay, and Kimmy Gatewood
Some of the PIT's instructors—who include such talents as Ali Farahnakian,
Kurt Braunohler, Ptolemy Slocum, Jen Nails, Pat Shay, Matt Donnelly, Kevin Scott,
Rebekka Johnson, and Kimmy Gatewood—perform improv for around 30 minutes.
Afterwards, house improv troupe The Baldwins takes the stage.
9:30 pm at The Peoples Improv Theater, 154 West 29th Street (off 7th Avenue); free
Host Justin Purnell provides a mix of guests who perform stand-up, improv, music,
and occasionally acts that defy categorization. The level of talent can vary wildly—
but for some (like me), that's part of the laid-back fun.
Come support the experimentation, and periodic magical surprises,
that this free show makes possible.
11:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); free

Mike Drucker
Lack o Etiquette Presents The Unintentional Comedy Hour

Daiva Deupree & Cathleen Carr
Carr & Deupree: Two Girls for Five Bucks
Two Girls For Five Bucks is talented comedy duo Cathleen Carr & Daiva Deupree, who frequently perform their darkly funny sketches in both NYC and Boston.
Among the show's highlights is a killer monologue by Daiva leaving the sort of phone message one never should on an ex-boyfriend's answering machine, with such self-recriminating lines as "Maybe we wouldn't have broken up if I'd given you more blow jobs."
Also notable are Cathleen & Daiva as frustrated 1940s housewives whose husbands are away fighting the war, and who are held back only by social mores from getting it on with each other.
For a few sample MP3 audio clips—most notably, the top one in which Daiva chats with Cathleen's vagina—please click here.

NYC Comedy Picks for Saturday 11/24/07
Tonight's recommendations for the best in NYC live comedy include
a hilarious entire evening of improv battles hosted by the wonderful Pat Baer, as a dozen
superb 3-person teams—which include some of the sharpest, funniest comics in NYC—compete to
be the last troupe standing in the 7th Annual 3-on-3 Improv Tournament (8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 pm).
Magnet instructors & Second City veterans such as Rachel Hamilton, Ed Herbstman, Abby Sher, and Miriam Tolan, plus stars of Mother: The Soundtrack Jason Mantzoukas, Tara Copeland, James Eason, Christine Walters, plus occasional special guests (such as superstar Mike Meyers), turn a tiny suggestion into larger-than-life improvised scenes.
7:30 pm at The Magnet Theatre, 254 West 29th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $5
Host Pat Baer
It all comes down to this.
Throughout November, 21 select comedy troupes, each with three members, have
battled for audience votes in this Seventh Annual Citywide 3-on-3 Improv Tournament.
In addition, a wildcard team was chosen lottery-style from the audience during
each quarter-final, making for a total of eight teams competing per evening.
This wildcard group added a delicious extra element of surprise,
as well as making the audience feel like it was part of the action.
And, delightfully, two out of the three wildcard teams won
(and, in both cases, totally earned the victory).
Out of the initial 24 teams from the quarter-finals, 12 have survived
the (impeccable) judgment of the audience and will be fighting it out
at tonight's semi-finals. Specifically, six will perform from 8:00-9:30 pm,
and the other six from 9:30-11:00 pm.
And the six teams garnering top votes from these semi-finals
will then plunge directly into the finals, which begin at 11:00 pm.
Hosting this entire extravaganza will be the wonderful and invaluable Pat Baer (above).
The six teams competing at the 8:00 pm show are, in order of scheduled appearance:
JAK (Wildcard Team #1: Katey Healy-Wurzburg, Ari Scott, and Josh Wartens)
Frankenstein Eyes (Marcy Jarreau, Violet Krumbein, and Aubrey Plaza)
Outlook of the Poet (Jonathan Gabrus, Ben Rodgers, and Gavin Speiller)
Zampano (Matt DeCoster, Megan Neuringer, and Andy Rocco)
Sidecar (Matt Fisher, Alden Ford, and Justin Tyler)
3/5ths Dudes (Eugene Cordero, Chris Gethard, and Bobby Moynihan)
That's a wonderful lineup, crammed with energy, experience, and talent.
Not to jinx anything, but my guess for winner of the tournament is up there;
plus Wildcard Team JAK is a shockingly strong troupe created by fate
that has a genuine chance of making it to the finals.
The six teams competing at the 9:30 pm show are, in order of scheduled appearance:
3D-Beard (Henry Kaiser, Joe Randazzo, and Chris Ryan)
Hot Sauce (Adam Pally, Ben Schwartz, and Gil Ozeri)
We Are All The Same Guy (Alex Clark, Craig Rowin, and Joe Wengert)
The Treehouse (Spike Friedman, Aaron Glaser, and Will Storie)
HAMMER (Wildcard Team #3: Bridget Carroll, D'Arcy Erokan, and Erik Tanouye)
C, C, + C Improv Factory (Chuck Dauble, Charlie Sanders, and Charlie Todd)
This superb lineup includes two of the most brilliant improv troupes in NYC,
and some delightful lesser-known groups. It too is a show well worth catching.
As for the six teams competing at the 11:00 pm show...we'll find out who they are tonight.
And around 12:30 am, we'll learn which of the original 24 teams
rose up against the odds to win this year's championship.
8:00 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11:00 pm at UCBT, 307 West 26th Street (off 8th Avenue); tickets are $8

NYC Comedy Picks for Sunday 11/25/07
Tonight's recommendations for the best in NYC live comedy include
UCBT's playground for celebrities and ace improvisors, ASSSSCAT 3000 (7:30 & 9:30 pm)
and stand-up from comedy hosts, including the charismatic Baron Vaughn, at Tragedy Plus Time (8:00 pm).
The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre's signature show, which features a monologist telling stories based on audience suggestions and a group of top improvisers (sometimes including stars such as SNL's Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz) creating scenes based on the stories. There are two shows every Sunday which share the same format, but are otherwise entirely different because everything is improvised. The 7:30 pm show is $8; advance tickets might be sold out by the time you read this, but a limited number of seats are available at the door for those who arrive early enough to nab 'em. The 9:30 show is free, with tickets distributed outside the theatre at 8:15 pm; but again, you may need to come early and wait on line to ensure getting into this first come, first served performance.
