NYC Comedy Picks for Monday 11/5/07
Tonight's recommendations for the best in NYC live comedy include
Jim Jeffries performing his recent Edinburgh Comedy Festival hit 30 (8:00 pm),
the legendary Roseanne Barr and beloved Mo Rocca interviewed at Shoot the Messenger (8:30 pm),
and superb stand-ups at one of the funniest shows in town, which happens to be free: Crash Test (11:00 pm).
Having enjoyed sold-out performances at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival for two years running, Jim Jeffries visits UCBT tonight to also win over New York. The theme of his show springs from recently reaching age 30: "It has not been an easy year so far; narrowly avoiding bombs in Iraq, split up from his long-time girlfriend, and having a tumor cut from his private parts." Four funny people tell amazing stories. Three of the tales are absolutely true...but

Normally hosted by Aziz Ansari (one of the best stand-up comics on the planet,
and co-star with fellow genius comics Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer
of MTV hit comedy series Human Giant). However, Aziz, Paul and Rob are
pretty tied up shooting the second season of Human Giant, so none of them
have managed to come to Crash Test for the past couple of weeks.

Some of the groups are great; some are less so. And this show
is designed more for students of improv than the general public.
But if you're interested, and patient, a mere $5 will buy you

SpeakEasy: Stories from the Back Room
There is little as satisfying as a well-told funny story...
that is, unless you can have an entire evening packed with them.

Glennis & Eliza: I Eat Pandas and Sunny-Side Up: Improv for Kids!
Glennis McMurray and Eliza Skinner are simply geniuses
at taking a suggestion from the audience and creating
an entire musical based around it, using only their imaginations,
immense talent, and the aid of their wonderful improv pianist
Frank Spitznagel. Each of these gals is a powerhouse performer;
what they manage to create together tends to be sheer magic.
Kudos to UCBT for giving them a stage; and don't miss
this chance to enjoy these comedic wizards at play.
The other half of this double bill is Sunny-Side Up: Improv for Kids!
The one time I caught this, it didn't match the wit or dark humor of, say,
last year's musical Oedipus for Kids; but since it's improv,
tonight will be an entirely different and, chances are, much better show.
There's certainly nothing wrong with the delightful cast, which includes
brilliant comedy star DC Pierson of Derrick, as well as Timothy Cooper,
Amey Goerlich, Don Hooper, Katie Schorr, Ari Scott, Nate Shelkey, and Michael Short.

Kurt Braunohler, Pat Shay, and Kimmy Gatewood
Some of the PIT's instructors—who include such talents as Ali Farahnakian,
Kurt Braunohler, Ptolemy Slocum, Jen Nails, Pat Shay, Matt Donnelly, Kevin Scott,
Rebekka Johnson, and Kimmy Gatewood—perform improv for around 30 minutes.
Afterwards, house improv troupe The Baldwins takes the stage.

The Engagement and The Situation Room
One of the finest talents in NYC is Kimmy Gatewood, who produces, directs, writes, acts, sings, dances, performs improv & sketch comedy—and tonight is doing this one-woman show.
The scenario: "Kim's getting married! It's the rehearsal dinner, and everyone is there—family, friends, co-workers...everyone, that is, except her husband-to-be. Kim runs into the coat room and refuses to come out. The whole family rallies: her best friend, her sister Val, her mother, her stepmother, her Youtubing younger cousin, and even Monkey the family dog. Things only gets worse when the best man tries to hit on her..." The script isn't perfect; but Kimmy's performance of it is definitely worth catching.

headed by David Juliano and Scott Courlander (above right).

sketches, jokes that never made it to air, and Kiley & friends performing favorite material.

This all-female extravaganza kicks off with We Kate Shelly,
a lively sketch show featuring singing, dancing, and crying,
written and starring the irresistible Kate Hess & Shelly Stover,
and directed by comedic genius Andy Secunda (The Swarm).
The double-bill then continues with Molly Prather performing her one-woman show
That Girl, which is described as follows: "If you found yourself at a bachelor party
and someone offered you $600 to take off your shirt, you'd be an idiot not to? Right?"
This comedic play enjoyed a six-month run at UCBT-LA. Directed by Eric Hunicutt.

Throughout November, 21 select comedy troupes, each with three members, battle for audience votes in this Seventh Annual Citywide 3-on-3 Improv Tournament.
In addition, a wildcard team is chosen lottery-style from the audience during each quarter-final, making for a total of eight teams competing per evening. This wildcard group adds a delicious extra element of surprise, as well as making the audience feel like it's part of the action.
The four teams with the most votes from each quarter-final advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, November 24th.
This tournament is hosted by the wonderful and invaluable Pat Baer (above).
The competition kicked off last week with two veteran teams garnering easy victories: 2006 Cage Match champion Hot Sauce (consisting of the razor-sharp Gil Ozeri, Adam Pally and Ben Schwartz); and the dynamic man's man improv troupe C, C + C Improv Factory (made up of the hilarious Chuck Dauble. A third winner was a lesser-known troupe with a great name: Frankenstein Eyes, an all-female team consisting of Aubrey Plaza, Marcy Jarreau, and Violet Krumbein.

And the fourth winner was, delightfully, the wildcard team! Although it consisted of three people who'd never met—Ari Scott, Josh Wartens, and Katey Healy-Wurzburg—the instant troupe (named JAK, an acronym for Jack-Ari-Kate) absolutely deserved the honor. Their secret was simple: Katey Healy-Wurzburg (stand-up comic who hosts monthly comedy show The Lorelei at the Parkside Lounge, and member of improv troupe Bad Data). This young performer was on fire, demonstrating utter fearlessness and radiating enough energy to light up the block. The talented Scott and Wartens were wise enough to play along with Healy-Wurzburg's lead...and while the scenes revolved around little more than cheating on a school test, Healy-Wurzburg's performance made JAK the most memorable group of the evening.
Many (including me) are looking forward to the return of all four teams in the semi-finals on November 24th.

The Apple Sisters: Thanks for Stuffing
The lovely Kimmy Gatewood, who is an exceptionally talented writer, director, and comedic performer, demonstrates that she's also great at singing and dancing—partnered beautifully with Rebekka Johnson and Sarah Lowe, and Tom Thomsen on keyboard—in this homage to 1940s girl groups like The Andrew Sisters. From the official description: "The Apple Sisters are Candy, Cora, and Seedy. Their mother, Ms. Reddy Apple, was a vaudeville star and she passed down the legacy to her three girls! The trio present their live show, broadcast on WXYZ AM Radio, straight to the troops in Germany, and present the show on stage at the Peoples Improv Theater in their first and favorite home, the Big Apple! Be a chum and always use Doramad Toothpaste, now with Thorium!"

The Upright Citizens Brigade's signature show, which features a monologist telling tales based on audience suggestions and a group of top improvisers creating scenes from the stories.
On this special evening, ASSSSCAT will star all four brilliant members of the
Upright Citizens Brigade: Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh.
In addition, it's slated to include such wonderful guests as Horatio Sanz and Chad Carter.
This show is the final event of the 2007 New York Comedy Festival...and is likely to be a highlight.
